Residing In Turkey

RESIDENCE PERMITS
Upon entry to Turkey visitors are issued with a three month multiple entry visa however if you wish to relocate to Turkey or stay for a period longer than three months you are advised by the Turkish authorities to obtain a residence permit or ikamet tezkeresi.

When is a residence permit required?
A residence permit is required by those who wish to apply for a work permit in Turkey (you are not permitted to work with a three month visitor's visa).

If you purchase property in Turkey you will need a residence permit to have a Turkish Telecom telephone registered in your name.

If your child is to attend an educational establishment in Turkey you must have resident’s status in order to register them.

A residence permit is necessary before you are able to clear any personal goods from Turkish customs.

How do I obtain one?
A residence permit can be obtained through application to the local police authorities after arrival in Turkey. If you wish to apply for residence prior to going to Turkey you should contact the Consulate General for the Republic of Turkey.

Following initial application a residence permit may be issued for a period of one or two years and thereafter for a maximum duration of five years.

If you can present a title deed in your name you may be granted 5 years of residency (provided your passport is valid for five years or more).

Those who wish to extend their residence period must reapply within 15 days of the current permit's expiry date.

To apply for a residence permit you require:
• 8 passport sized photographs
• An official declaration stating your address and from which date you require residency
• 3 application forms (completed with a typewriter)
• Photocopies of your passport ID and the visa and stamp of your last entry to Turkey
• Details regarding your financial status and means of economic support to be utilised during residency (Bankbooks, pension income, credit card details).
• Any other relevant information eg. title deeds of any property purchased in Turkey.
• The fee (which varies according to nationality and the duration of the permit applied for).
• An additional 70 YTL must be paid at the post office to cover the cost of the permit book.

Please note that the above details are for general information purposes only and although fees quoted above are correct at the time of writing they may be subject to change. For foreign nationals of some countries the procedure and requirements may vary.
